Circumstances, environments, mindstates, feelings and perception make up the entirety of our reality. A moments reflection reveals that any appearance of any element of such a reality is inherently unreliable. There is no appearance that will lastingly satisfy and none that we won’t ultimately lose. This realization can be our focus. That despite the urgency, immediacy and intensity, one day, everything will cease to be. The absence of being could also be a powerful focus. In absence, there is fruition. That which we think we are will be over, and in the absence of the manifest is complete freedom.

Resting… https://ageing.resiliencyinitiative.com/resting/ https://ageing.resiliencyinitiative.com/resting/#respond Mon, 08 Jul 2024 18:11:05 +0000 https://ageing.resiliencyinitiative.com/?p=76 As we age, it is best to become process oriented rather than outcome oriented. This means that we cease to rely on results or acquisitions. Why is this? Because, when we depend on acquiring things, we reinforce everything that we will soon lose. The body goes, faculties dwindle and companionship fades. If in the midst of all this, we continue to seek to do and acquire, we set ourselves up for distress. How then do we manage our needs? By fully understanding and accepting that we might not get what we want or wish for. Ageing is a time of attrition, and if we can curtail our desire for certainty, we learn to develop the capacity to endure whatever might be unfolding. Demanding that things turn out a certain way is fruitless when we have to be at peace with the eventual loss of everything.

Coping as we age https://ageing.resiliencyinitiative.com/coping-as-we-age/ https://ageing.resiliencyinitiative.com/coping-as-we-age/#respond Mon, 11 Mar 2024 22:10:54 +0000 https://ageing.resiliencyinitiative.com/?p=73 To a large extent, our repertoire for ways to cope with difficulties employs the physical body. With ageing, the body invariably starts to fail and there is considerable loss in dexterity and reach. Thus, coping during old age is effected more by the mind than by the body. This means that the mind ought to be developed to compensate for the eventual attrition and decay of the physical body. While this might sound extremely morose, we should remember that the body is actually a state of severe limitation. Even when we are younger, injury and affliction constantly ravage what we think is our most prized possession. The body doesn’t house us, rather, we cultivate the body. And along with that comes pride, envy, ill-will and desperation. If we can keep the body reasonably functional, we ought to not cultivate it further, at least as we age. Doing this frees us from a state of extreme limitation and we are able to grow a part of our being that is not constrained too much by structure or conferred definition. If the importance of what has been mentioned above is realized, the turmoil that is the body might be bypassed in favor of any basis that makes up our mind. With this happening, we could live at peace even with the loss of that which is held most dear.

Discovering the Means for Ageing Successfully with Little https://ageing.resiliencyinitiative.com/ageing-successfully-even-when-we-have-little/ https://ageing.resiliencyinitiative.com/ageing-successfully-even-when-we-have-little/#respond Thu, 01 Feb 2024 11:32:35 +0000 https://ageing.resiliencyinitiative.com/?p=32 Discovering the means for ageing successfully even when we have little is a process that involves learning, restraint and resolve. During youth, we seek experiences. Implicit with this desire is perhaps the knowledge that everything ends. Hence, we accumulate and such a disposition never leaves us. As time passes, we learn to rely on the process as well as the gains of accumulation. During our travels, we stop to admire the view and collect memories, and we try and forget that someday even our body will leave us. The elements and the momentum of such gatherings likely don’t end till we are forced to recognize that the end is near. If we can practice recalling that everything is temporary, and that nothing lastingly satisfies, we are served well and ageing with ease becomes possible. Ageing successfully even when we have little isn’t about depriving ourselves. It is realizing that if we can learn to depend on the fewest possible things, we can be free. And nothing is more important than being free, because even our body is entrapment. A fact we get to realize as we age, when the body starts to fail us. Having little isn’t failure, it is actually a blessing. Seeing this clearly is the primary means to ageing successfully. When we seek to acquire and use only what we need, we minimize the setback of cessation. And if this is done in the service of being free, even cessation becomes liberating. Depending on little is more valuable than acquiring abilities or possessions, because these can be lost. The capacity to be fulfilled without much, if cultivated, never fails us. And with ageing, everything actually does. When we don’t have much, we learn to be innovative and more efficient. There is joy in the exercise of simplicity of this nature and we start to discover plenty even when there is little.
